It’s a normal day in suburbia. Bright and sunny; the smell of lemon freshener in the air. You’re at home, relaxing, a chorus of dogs barking outside, your spouse happily chit-chatting. Your mind wanders. Only for a few moments. Maybe just a few seconds. But long enough.

Long enough to be confused by the sudden silence, an eerie silence. The air’s suddenly pregnant with tension, thick with it.

You look at your spouse, searching for a clue, looking to understand. Hoping the answer ...

Grab your coonskin cap, you Kentucky trailblazer. And get ready to channel your inner Daniel Boone. At least the version of Daniel Boone popularized by actor Fess Parker. The real Boone didn’t like coonskin caps, and wore beaver felt hats instead. Reality often isn’t as sexy as the myth. Like how Sasquatch is really a homeless guy from California.

I’m a Charlie Huston honk. There, I admitted it. Like the first step out of twelve, I recognize my problem. And I feel unburdened. Free almost. I’m a Huston-holic. A junkie for Charlie’s magical mushroom prose. And like every good Huston-holic, I’m always searching for writers with a similar style. Writers that’ll grab me by the throat, worrying me like a dog.

Enter Josh Bazell.

I love pulp novels. Love them to death. An ugly, messy death, with purple pasties covering its grim reapers. Exploitative. Visceral. Unapologetic. Pulp fiction never says sorry, never backs down. It’s an alpha dog in a beta world. In literature and in that black muscle I call a heart, pulp fiction rules.

But the old dime pulp novels and penny dreadfuls have almost completely disappeared, slashed and burned like the Brazilian rainforest, their bastard offspring now residing in various genres—mystery, ...

Roger Waters wrote in the classic Pink Floyd song Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 the now famous lyrics:

We don’t need no education.

We don’t need no thought control.

Isamu Fukui seemingly agrees with these sentiments in his latest novel Truancy Origins, a book that stokes rebellion in the educational system, frees minds, and makes certain students aren’t just another brick in the wall. Or at least, it believes itself rebellious. But like most teenage rebellion, it’s ...

Surviving cloned animals are generally unhealthy, suffering from defects to their vital organs and premature aging. Not to mention the ethical questions involved. Just because we can do it—should we? It’s a veritable dream for ethical philosophers. And a nightmare for everyone else.

Making deals with the devil means that some day you have to pay up. When that day comes you can expect a Ferryman at your door. And they don't have a problem dragging you, kicking and screaming. A delicious guilty pleasure.

Review: Ferryman #4 (DC/Wildstorm)

Splattered Beauty tries hard to be a low rent horror movie. Tries really hard. And succeeds for the most part, reading like a novelization of a straight-to-DVD terror gem. Like a fleshed out screenplay.

Review: Splattered Beauty by Brandon Ford

It's an interesting choice by Ford. A fanboy homage. But works best with a specialized audience who knows what they are getting going in. Being a B-movie geek helps.

Just posted a review of Thunderer by Felix Gilman on the site.

The book is wildly imaginative and intriguing, but it seemed to be missing something that would really put it into one of the best of 2008. Still it was very good and would have made the Honorable mentions on my year-end list for a debut novel.

Strangely, I haven't decided if I'm interested in releasing Gilman's recently released follow-up The Gears of the City. Anyone have any impressions of that novel?
