PostSubject: General fantasy recommendations   Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:31 pm

Making a list of good fantasy books along with a set of descriptions that would help readers pick their next read occurred to me some time ago. The result of this is following list:

Fantasy book recommendations

The list is by no means complete, but it's a good start on which I intend to build. Smile
If anyone has suggestions/recommendations for authors that are not listed there yet, please let me know!

I had a first look at your recommendations. Some I like and some I dislike.

I don't understand why people recommend Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke.
This book was absolutely boring for me.

People's likes and dislikes are a mystery. Smile

I for example can't understand how people fall in love with the Sword of Truth series. cyclops

Everyone is different and everyone likes different things...

I agree that people's likes and dislikes are a mystery Suspect

To be honest which kind of world would we have without such mysteries : Question : Question : Question

But the good thing is that we can talk about it without killing each other!!!

You don't like The Sword of Truth series. But I like it. Even I read only the first book of the series.

And why I like it? OK, we have two heroes on a mission and I like see how they will reach their target. Of course I know that they won't die because that would end the story.

If you average out the series as a whole, I like it. I love some books, I hate others, I even I can admit there is some seriously funky prose in there sometimes. Agree to disagree over tSoT series, opinions just run too strong over it. I would say the same goes with the Wheel of TIme series, but to a lesser extent.

A great fantasy pick is the Prince of Nothing series by R Scott Bakker. Not to have a shameless blurb for my blog (i know its not allowed!) but I posted on it there, so go check it out if your interested and post back here. Its fairly new so don't judge me too harshly!
